When your brand disappears from an AI answer, the temptation is to rewrite the website. I would start by saving the answer and checking what changed around it.
An announcement gives you a date to investigate, but says little about what to fix. AEO after an AI model update should begin with a diagnosis your team can test.
Can a model update change which brands AI recommends?
Yes. Model changes can alter answers, and newly available information can change what an assistant finds. However, seeing different recommendations after an announcement does not prove the model caused them.
Separate the model’s learned knowledge from the information retrieved during a response. Check which mechanism could explain the changed answer before choosing a fix.
New training data can change a model’s learned knowledge when providers incorporate it. But a new model name does not tell you which data changed, or explain a particular brand recommendation.
According to Anthropic’s web search documentation, Claude can retrieve current information beyond its knowledge cutoff. It can also answer without searching, depending on what the user asks.
OpenAI documents separate controls for search crawling and potential training use. Publishing a better page may help a search-enabled answer find useful information. That does not mean you have retrained the model.
Our SEO versus GEO guide explains how the disciplines overlap. Here, start with an answer that matters to your buyers. Establish what changed before deciding how to respond.
What should you compare before changing anything?
Compare saved answers to the same buyer questions under consistent conditions. Record the assistant, model where visible, search setting, location, and date. Keep the exact wording of each prompt unchanged.
Then separate a missing brand mention from a missing citation or an inaccurate claim. Each observation points toward a different investigation, even when the dashboard groups them together.
Start a fresh conversation for each comparison to reduce carryover from earlier messages. Repeat the checks across several dates. A single response is weak evidence for a lasting change.
Our AEO visibility tracker guide explains how to keep that record. Add release dates and website edits alongside it, so unrelated changes do not disappear into the model-update story.
| Observed change | Evidence to save | First investigation |
|---|---|---|
| Brand mention disappears | Full answers and competitors | Prompt conditions and source changes |
| Owned citation disappears | Old and replacement URLs | Access, accuracy, and relevance |
| Brand description becomes wrong | Incorrect claim and cited source | Outdated owned or outside information |
| Tracker score drops alone | Prompt set and collection settings | Measurement changes |
Which website changes deserve attention first?
Start with problems that prevent useful information from being found or understood. Check the affected URLs for access failures, outdated claims, missing evidence, and unclear answers to the buyer’s question.
Match the repair to the observed problem. A pricing answer needs accurate pricing information; a broken citation may require restoring a URL. Neither finding automatically justifies rewriting every service page.
Google’s guidance for AI features says existing SEO practices remain relevant. Supporting pages must be indexed and eligible for snippets; special AI files or schema are not required.
Read the replacement source beside your page. Does it answer a question you avoid, specify who the service fits, or support its claim? Write down the concrete difference before commissioning more content.
When should you look beyond your own website?
Look outside your website when relevant answers rely on evidence your company cannot credibly supply alone. Independent reviews, customer experiences, and specialist coverage can help buyers evaluate claims made on your own pages.
Read the sources appearing for your target questions before choosing an outreach strategy. Identify the specific claim that needs corroboration, and whether the cited publication covers it.
Research from Ahrefs across 75,000 brands found a strong association between web mentions and AI visibility. Its study measured correlation and selected established domains using authority and search-volume thresholds.
That evidence does not prove outside mentions cause better answers or outperform every website improvement. It also does not isolate independent endorsements from all brand mentions. Treat it as a reason to investigate.
An honest customer review might address a buyer’s implementation concern. A relevant publication might explain your expertise. Both deserve consideration when they fill a real evidence gap, without manufacturing praise or promising placement.
Are AEO tools moving beyond visibility tracking?
Some vendors now recommend changes alongside their visibility reports. Recommendations tied to specific pages and competing citations can help teams decide what to fix next.
Read the evidence behind each suggestion before assigning it. Your team needs to judge whether the proposed change answers the buyer’s question. Decide how to measure its effect.
Profound’s content optimization product describes prioritized recommendations for missing topic coverage, page structure, and citation gaps. Ask for a demonstration using your buyer questions and existing pages.
Profound also describes drafting updates and sending them through CMS-connected workflows, with human review checkpoints. Ask which actions the tool can perform and where your team must take over.
Scrunch’s Site Maps documentation describes page audits and actionable suggestions for existing content. Examples include clearer introductions and next steps. These are vendor-described capabilities, not guarantees of citations or revenue.
Who should own the fix and the retest?
Give each change an owner who can implement it, a reviewer, and a retest date. Attach the original observation so everyone knows which problem the task addresses.
Separate access repairs, content work, and independent evidence into distinct tasks where possible. If everything changes together, the next report will tell you little about which fix deserves more budget.
| Evidence gap | Action owner | Retest evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Page inaccessible to retrieval | Engineering or technical SEO | Access check and repeated answers |
| Owned answer incomplete | Content lead and subject expert | Correct claim and relevant citations |
| Independent evidence missing | Customer marketing or PR | Relevant coverage and answer changes |
| Visibility disconnected from demand | Growth and analytics | Qualified inquiries and buyer feedback |
Agree on a review date before implementation, then allow for discovery and recrawling. Record what shipped and when. Repeat the original questions rather than replacing difficult prompts with easier ones.
This is how I would scope AEO and GEO work: a documented problem, an accountable owner, and an evaluation plan. Visibility, referral traffic, and qualified inquiries belong in separate columns.
At the review, decide whether the result justifies continuing the work. If citations improve without useful inquiries, investigate buyer intent and the conversion path before expanding the same activity.
