The best TikTok ads agency for a DTC brand must fit the way customers buy. Website conversion campaigns need strong media buying, tracking, landing-page coordination, and creative supply. TikTok Shop campaigns also need affiliate operations and clean product data because GMV Max controls much of the campaign delivery.
Most TikTok agency pitches still open with the same dashboard tour. That hides an important distinction. A website conversion program sends shoppers to the brand’s site, while a Shop program closes the sale inside TikTok.
For website sales, you are still paying for campaign decisions and conversion-path coordination. For Shop sales, you are paying more for the creative, creator, affiliate, and product inputs that feed GMV Max.
What should a DTC brand look for in a TikTok ads agency?
Screen agencies on five inputs: sales-path fit, weekly creative output, creator operations, product data, and total-business measurement. Media buying remains important for website conversion campaigns. For Shop campaigns, supply and operating inputs carry more weight because GMV Max handles more delivery decisions.
Use this as your scorecard on the first call.
| What to screen | What good looks like | What a weak answer sounds like |
|---|---|---|
| Sales-path fit | Explains how website conversion and Shop campaigns differ, then scopes the right operating model | Uses one campaign playbook for every DTC brand |
| Creative supply | A named weekly output number, a production process behind it, and last month's actual count | "We test creative regularly" with no number attached |
| Creator and affiliate program | Active recruiting, sample seeding, commission structure, and a list of creators already producing | "We can source creators if you want" as an add-on line item |
| Product and conversion data | Audits site events and product pages, or Shop titles, images, price, inventory, and reviews | "That is handled by your ecommerce team" |
| Measurement | Reports blended revenue and new-customer cost beyond in-platform ROI | Screenshots of platform ROI with no view of total revenue |
If a candidate scores well on creative but cannot explain your conversion path, you have a content shop. That can still be the right hire. Know what you bought before assigning it revenue ownership.
How do website conversion campaigns differ from TikTok Shop campaigns?
Website conversion campaigns send the click to a product page or landing page that the brand controls. The agency must manage audience, bid, creative, pixel events, and the handoff to the site. A weak landing page or broken purchase event can erase gains from the ad account.
TikTok Shop campaigns keep discovery and purchase inside TikTok. GMV Max automates more delivery decisions. The agency’s work shifts toward product listings, inventory, reviews, affiliates, and a steady creative supply.
| Sales path | Agency must own | Primary failure risk |
|---|---|---|
| Brand website | Campaign decisions, tracking, creative, landing-page coordination | Clicks arrive, but site conversion or event quality breaks |
| TikTok Shop | Creative supply, affiliates, product data, GMV Max inputs | Automation lacks fresh assets or reliable commerce inputs |
Some DTC brands run both paths. In that case, ask the agency to define separate goals, budgets, and measurement for each. A blended TikTok total can hide a strong Shop program and a weak website campaign, or the reverse.
Why did TikTok Shop screening criteria change in 2026?
TikTok moved Shop Ads toward automation. According to TikTok’s own GMV Max migration documentation, GMV Max became the only supported Shop Ads campaign type. The change took effect in July 2025. Product Shopping Ads, Video Shopping Ads, and LIVE Shopping Ads were phased out for Shop destinations.
Advertisers can no longer create, edit, or duplicate campaigns in those retired formats. Historical ROI carries over to become the target ROI inside the new GMV Max campaign. Product GMV Max then picks the products, the creative assets, and the placements on its own.
Product selection, asset selection, and placement once helped a media buyer earn their fee on TikTok. All three now sit inside the automation.
Meanwhile, the channel keeps growing. Research from eMarketer, reported by Retail Dive, projects TikTok Shop sales above $20 billion in 2026. By 2027 that is close to a quarter of all US social commerce. A channel that size, running on a system you cannot hand-tune, rewards whoever supplies it best.
For Shop campaigns, agencies now compete more on supply than settings. Website conversion campaigns still require close attention to media buying, event quality, and the site experience.
How much creative and creator content is enough?
There is no universal asset count. Both website and Shop campaigns need fresh creative, although Shop depends more heavily on creator and affiliate supply. In the DTC Shop accounts we audit, performance tracks that supply far more closely than budget changes.
A workable baseline for a DTC brand spending seriously on TikTok:
- Weekly, not monthly, cadence. New assets land every week, so fatigue never gets a chance to compound.
- Three source types running at once. Brand content, paid creator content, and organic affiliate content behave differently in the auction.
- Hooks varied on purpose. Keep the product fixed and change the first 2 seconds. This reveals which angle sells.
- A replenishment plan, not a launch batch. Ask what happens in month four, when the original shoot is exhausted.
Ask every candidate for the raw count they shipped for a comparable client last month. A real production operation answers in seconds. Our post on AI UGC versus real creators for paid ads covers where each source type earns its cost.

Should the agency run your affiliate program, or only your ads?
Affiliate programs are core to TikTok Shop for most DTC brands. Affiliates supply the content volume GMV Max needs. Website-only programs may use creators without running a Shop affiliate operation, so scope this work to the sales path.
Ask how the candidate handles the unglamorous parts:
- Recruiting and outreach. Who finds creators, and at what weekly volume?
- Sample logistics. Who ships product, and who chases the ones who never post?
- Commission design. What rate, and does it change by product margin?
- Whitelisting. Which affiliate posts get promoted with spend, and who decides?
Those four answers tell you whether affiliates are a real workstream or a slide.
How should a TikTok agency measure DTC results?
Hold the agency to total business revenue, beyond in-platform reported ROI. For website campaigns, compare TikTok-attributed purchases with ecommerce and new-customer data. For Shop, GMV Max’s target ROI helps steer delivery but remains an incomplete agency scorecard.
| Metric | What it tells you | How it misleads |
|---|---|---|
| In-platform ROI | Whether GMV Max is hitting its own target | Counts sales the algorithm found, including buyers who would have purchased anyway |
| Blended MER | Total revenue against total ad spend across all channels | Moves slowly, so it hides which channel caused a change |
| New-customer cost | What you pay to add a first-time buyer | Requires order-level data that platform reporting will not give you |
| Off-TikTok lift | Whether TikTok content moves your site and search demand | Easy to claim, hard to prove without a holdout test |
The last row is where most disagreements start. TikTok content often drives purchases that close on your own site or through search. A good agency proposes a way to test that claim. A weak one asserts it in the monthly deck.
For the underlying method, see our guide to incrementality testing on AI-automated campaigns.
What questions expose a weak fit?
Six questions, asked in this order, sort candidates quickly:
- How many TikTok assets did you ship for your largest DTC client last month?
- Who on your team recruits affiliates, and how many did they onboard last quarter?
- What do you do when GMV Max target ROI is met but total revenue is flat?
- Which parts of my product page or Shop listing would you change before we spend anything?
- How would you prove TikTok is adding customers rather than reshuffling them?
- What does month four look like when the first content batch is spent?
Question three is the one that separates operators from reporters. A campaign can hit its target while total revenue stays flat. That may mean the automation is harvesting demand you already had.
Where does The Remarkable fit?
We fit brands limited by creative and creator supply, a common bottleneck across website and Shop campaigns. Our AI performance creative work increases weekly testing volume without matching production costs. That supply helps consumer and DTC brands support both sales paths.
We are not the right fit for brands seeking a pure Shop operations vendor. Those teams first need help with listings, logistics, and customer service.
